Vertigo, what is it?

Vertigo is a sensation of dizziness or spinning, often described as feeling like the room is moving around you. It is a common symptom that can be caused by various conditions and can affect people of all ages.

Vertigo is not a disease in itself, but rather a symptom of an underlying issue with the balance and coordination systems in the body.

The most common cause of vertigo is a problem with the inner ear, specifically the vestibular system. This system helps us maintain our balance and sense of orientation by sending signals to the brain about our head and body movements.

When this system is disrupted, it can result in vertigo. Some of the most common conditions that can cause vertigo are:

  • Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV): This is the most common cause of vertigo and occurs when tiny calcium crystals in the inner ear become dislodged and float into one of the balance canals.
  • Meniere's disease: This chronic condition affects the inner ear and can cause episodes of vertigo, hearing loss, and ringing in the ears.
  • Vestibular neuritis: This is an inflammation of the vestibular nerve, which connects the inner ear to the brain. It can result in sudden onset vertigo that lasts for several days.
